BACI Parent Information and Support E-Newsletter September 23, 2011


Open invitation to family bloggers:  BACI Family Services would like to invite everyone who has a family member with extra support needs to contribute to our family blog.  Do you know someone special who has made a difference in your child’s life?  Do you have a pet peeve?  Have you always wanted a forum to talk about your sibling’s future?  We would love to hear from you.  I have started the blog off with a movie review, you can read it HERE.  Email Carol Stinson at family.services@gobaci.com or use the contact us link on the blogsite.

BACI EVENTS:

 

BACI visits the Haunted Village: We had such a great time last year we are going again!
WHEN: Friday, October 28th.  Lets meet on the deck outside the front entrance at 6:00 PM to enjoy the experience together .
WHERE: Burnaby Village Museum, 6501 Deer Lake Avenue (Canada Way and Sperling, just east of Kensington Avenue)
COST: The Family Services program has some funds to cover the admission for families, up to four members per.  Please contact Sarah at sarah.baumbusch@gobaci.com or Carol Stinson at family.services@gobaci.com for more information or to register.

BACI Inclusion Through Innovation Award Nominations Open:  The Inclusion Through Innovation Awards recognize individuals and organizations that have used social innovation strategies to advance the inclusion of people of all abilities in Burnaby.  The deadline for nominations is October 14, 2011. BACI Chinese Parent Support Group: Next meeting is Saturday, October 1st, 6:30 PM, 7716 Royal Oak.  *Note* that because of the long weekends in October and November the October meeting will be October 1st and the November meeting will be November 5th.  Please see THE FLYER for general information and contact John Tsang for information on the speaker.

A Social Life, the Youth Social Group:  This youth and parent Social Group meets the second and fourth Sunday every month.

 FREE IEP and Advocacy Workshops in Port Coquitlam:  Hosted by Simon Fraser Society for Community Living, this two part workshop is for parents who have school age children with extra support needs. The workshops are dedicated to information and discussion on IEP Planning, funding, services for students with special needs, effective advocacy, and building collaborative relationships with your school.  The workshops will focus on the Coquitlam School District however most of the information as applicable across the province.
WHEN:  Wednesday, September 28th and Wednesday, October 5th 6:30 – 8:30 PM
WHERE: Simon Fraser Society for Community Living,1551 Salisbury, Port Coquitlam
COST:  Free, but registration is required.

I.E.P. Bootcamp:  Want to learn more about IEPs? Want to make sure your child’s IEP is doing the job? Hosted by the Learning Disabilities Association.
WHEN:  Monday October 3rd, 6 PM – 9 PM
WHERE:  Minnekhada Middle School, 1390 Laurier Avenue, Port Coquitlam

Centre for Abilities Sib Group:  The CFA social work department is again hosting groups for children aged 7 – 12 years who have a sibling with a disability.  The group is open to all current and former families who have received services from the CFA and the first meeting is Tuesday October 4th.  Please see THE FLYER for more information.

 

Tri-Cities Transition Resource Fair:  New for 2011, a fall transition resource fair.  There are also some break-out sessions on planning and networking.

HandyDart Appreciation Week:  Parent Tom Mooney is organizing a week to thank all the folks at HandyDart.  Tom writes:  My daughter Vicki is a regular Handy DART user. Like many of her peers with developmental disabilities, she sometimes has difficulty communicating her appreciation to the drivers and staff of this vital service.

Sibling Jam:  SIBLING JAM is a new workshop for adult siblings. Through various writing, storytelling, visual art and drama based exercises we will begin to explore our relationships to our siblings individually and as a group. No art experience is necessary. Sense of humour is an asset. The workshop is facilitated by Cat Main and Sylvie Rousseau.
WHEN:  Sunday October 30th, 10 AM – 4 PM

Parents of Youth with Disabilites Transition Group:  This parent group alternates their meetings between the east side and west side of Vancouver.  The first meeting is in October on the West Side and November on the East Side:

Family Support Institute Annual Trivia Night:  Trivia fans raised approximately $4,000 last year with your support.  The to make the 4th annual trivia night should be bigger and better with plenty of laughter, singing and fun!!   Carol Stinson is organizing a BACI team, so contact Carol if you would like join the BACI team (contact information is at end of this newsletter).  Please see THE FLYER for more information.
