Dear parents and family members,
Our Fall Family Education Series is now up and running, with posAbilities and the Burnaby Association (BACI) presenting a workshop on Building Support Networks for persons with disabilities. Families are welcome to come as a group (parent(s), sibs, support worker).
The workshop will be held on Saturday, November 5 at BACI in Burnaby, and is free of charge. Please see the enclosed flyer for more information and registration details. The deadline to register is Friday, October 28, 2011.
Why come?
Have you ever wondered who will serve as your son’s or daughter’s representative or trustee? Who will pick them up for Thanksgiving dinner? Or, who will be in their circle of friends down the road? If so, then this workshop is designed to assist you.
Start thinking about how a person’s circle of support can be expanded and developed. Learn how to overcome challenges with a like-minded folks who are passionate about exploring how relationships can be stronger and deeper. Success stories will be shared from throughout the province.
*For those who have previously heard Aaron and Susan to speak on this topic – please note that this will be a more in-depth discussion.*
Following this workshop, we will ask self advocates and families to let us know if they would like more support in developing a network. If so, the presenters, Aaron and Susan of Spectrum Society, would work with a small group of folks, centered on the networks or 3-4 individuals, over the course of one year. Each person would have their goals and objectives on how to expand their network. The facilitators would then call the group together several times throughout the year to celebrate successes and to assist those who may be experiencing challenges. At the end of the process, the idea is that each of these individuals will have an expanded and active network of support.
If you have any questions, please give me a call and I will do my best to answer them for you. We would like to acknowledge the support of Community Living BC, who has funded these workshops.
