BACI UPDATES & EVENTS June 30, 2011:

Strike Update: On June 22, the BC Labour Relations Board (LRB) ordered the organization representing Community Living employers – the Community Social Services Employer Association (CSSEA) – to cooperate to determine essential service levels. This will involve mediation and adjudication at the LRB, and should be finalized by July 22. See more at the Family Support Blog.

Celebration of Life – Roy Cavallin: We are sad to announce that Roy Cavallin, a long-time active member of BACI, has passed. Our condolences go to his family and, in particular, his son Tim. A celebration of Roy’s life will be held on Tuesday, July 12 at 1:00 pm, at Oceanview Funeral Chapel, 4000 Imperial Street, Burnaby.

Building Connections: BACI’s Family Resource Drop-In. It’s a fun time for children up to six years of age to express themselves through music, as well as a great time for parents/caregivers to socialize and build support networks.
WHEN: Third Saturday of every month, from 10:00 AM to Noon (Please see THE FLYER for the exact dates)
WHERE: 7622 12th Avenue in Burnaby (childcare portable at 12th Ave Elementary) Please see THE FLYER for more information on the program.

Music on Mondays: Will be continuing through the summer on Monday July 4th and Monday August 8th. Please see THE FLYER for more information.

Canada Day Celebration in Burnaby: There is lots to do at Burnaby Village Museum on Canada Day starting at 11 AM. See the FULL SCHEDULE.

City of Burnaby Adapted Summer Programs: Please visit the BURNABY LEISURE GUIDE, pages 8 & 9 for a listing of all the programs.

Summer Hang Out in Vancouver: is an exciting week-long program for high-functioning teens with developmental disabilities to meet new friends and have fun.

WHEN: Weekly, August 8th – 26th, 9 AM – NOON

WHERE: Renfrew Park Community Centre, 2929 E 22nd Ave. Vancouver.

Phil Allen: The One Most Likely to Succeed Al Etmanski has written a short article on long-time BACI friend Phil Allen. Phil is still an active advocate, sits on BACI’s Advocacy Committee and he is a newly published author. You can get a free copy of Phil’s book too! See THE ARTICLE.

BC Self Advocay Foundation: Take some time to visit the New Website and Blog from the BCSAF. The first Blog Post is on stereotyping and bullying by David Johnston.

Ripple Effect 7: BCACL is hosting The Ripple Effect 7, a retreat for families supporting a child with special needs, coming October 14 – 16 2011. This fall’s retreat will be held at the Ainsworth Hot Springs Resort in the West Kootenays. The Ripple Effect is a chance for families to join facilitators from the BC Association for Community Living and other families from across B.C. for a FREE thought-provoking and educational retreat, exploring the power of advocacy and community development. RDSP Three year Survey: What do you think? PLAN and the RDSP Resource Centre would like to hear your experience and thoughts about the Disability Tax Credit eligibility and the RDSP.

Giving in Action Society: The Society has received more funds from (MCFD) and the Vancouver Foundation, and are pleased to announce that the Giving in Action Society is now accepting applications for the Children and Youth with Special Needs Fund. Established in 2006, the Children and Youth with Special Needs (CYSN) Fund provides grants to families who have children or youth (under 19) with special needs living at home. SFSCL Summer Youth Drop-In: The Simon Fraser Society for Community Living is once again offering a community based, summer drop-in youth group for youth aged 15 – 24 who live in the Tri-Cities and New Westminster and have developmental disabilities. Please see THE FLYER for more information.
